The UK alt-electro-pop solo artist, Michael Walden, started Tontine as a passion project; a commitment to bringing to life uniquely amalgamated samples, synths, layered vocals and recorded instrumentals in accessibly distinct hyper-pop form.

Away from the bright lights in his bands, the Surrey-based artist is looking inside, melding the dark with the light and leading by example with the introspective candour in his live-feel debut EP, I.

The opening single, If I Could, rivals Empathy Test for visceral emotion while the futuristic production sweeps euphoric gloss over his entrancing yet unconventional chord sequences that make it so satisfying to take Tontine’s lead as he walks lesser trodden paths.

NIFE takes a contemporary balladic turn, channelling the compellingly ethereal compassion of London Grammar through instrumentation, lyricism, and quiescently vulnerable vocal delivery alike. The delicate orchestral strings against the ascending piano melodies and his imploringly tender vocal timbre are a lesson in grief-stricken sincerity.

Closing the EP, Only the Once, starts with a glitchy dream pop prelude before the soul shimmers through the forlorn yet optimistically bright single, which fuses an inhibited yearning for connection with Beach House-Esque choral fervour.

Tontine said:

“This is the first of three EPs I'll be putting out over the next 12 months consisting of music I've been working on for a few years now. I want to showcase what I can do as an artist who writes, records, produces, and mixes everything themselves; this first collection of songs is centred around the theme of loss in various forms, and is a taste of bigger things to come.”

Amelia Vandergast, Executive Editor at A&R Factory said:

“Tontine grabbed a pack of matches and set hearts alight with his debut EP. For all the diehard romantics out there, come and feel the heat.”

About

I have played in rock bands my whole life and performed full-time in a band for four years, but as I've gotten older my musical tastes have diversified. Inspired by artists such as Radiohead, Massive Attack, the 1975 and Bonobo, I've become very interested in production and sound design, and I am now, as a solo artist, writing what I believe is the best music I've ever written, free from the rules and formulas that exist in rock and able to explore sound and harmony in a way that I couldn’t before.

I've been working on various tracks for several years now and am excited to finally be showcasing some of my work, whilst still working hard on developing my sound for upcoming releases. It's a passion project that I do because it's my calling, but if it were to lead to something more then that would be a dream come true.
