DE: Romeo & Julia triumphs at Berlin premiereOFFICIAL PRESS RELEASENEWS PROVIDED BY BMG Thunderous applause, multiple ovations and critical acclaim have greeted the musical Romeo & Julia - Liebe ist alles, co-written by BMG songwriters Peter Plate and Ulf Leo Sommer, and produced by BMG, which debuted at the renowned Theater des Westens (TDW) in Berlin on Sunday, March 20. The duo’s latest musical follows the success of their first musical Ku’damm 56, which was also produced by BMG in cooperation with sister-company UFA. The twice-extended musical attracted over 300,000 visitors since its premiere in November 2021 and was named the most successful German-language musical of 2022. The newly released musical Romeo & Julia – Liebe ist alles transposes Shakespeare’s famous tragedy to the contemporary era, accompanied by pop hits, including the hit single ‘Liebe ist Alles’ released by the German band Rosenstolz in 2004 and written by Plate and Sommer. Dominique Casimir, BMG Chief Content Officer, said: “With their new production of Romeo & Julia, Peter Plate, Ulf Leo Sommer and the entire creative team have once again outdone themselves. Shakespeare’s emotional play full of contrasts and with music full of hope, love and confidence, adapted for the present is breathtakingly realized by the actors. We are incredibly proud and excited about a new musical for the capital on the iconic stage of the Theater des Westens.” Governing Mayor of Berlin Franziska Giffey said: “It’s just overwhelmingly beautiful! I really have to say, it is so deeply touching. Really gripping!” Claudia Roth, Minister of State for Culture and Media, said: “It’s great, it’s heart-touching. There are great hits in it. It’s just wonderful.” German actor Heike Makatsch said: “This is highly emotional. It’s Super-Pop. Amazing songs... I had tears in my eyes.” The musical follows BMG announcement in September 2022 that it has taken a long-term lease of the renowned 1,600-seat Theater des Westens until the end of 2024 to provide a home to its growing live event business. This includes not only BMG’s growing roster of stage musicals but also a series of residencies by national and international artists, as well as a diverse and multi-genre event program series that will run under the historic name TingelTangel, the cabaret which gave 1930s Berlin its sparkle.
