The BBC selected arguably Britain’s favorite Australian, Kylie Minogue, to front the intro to its coverage of semi-final coverage of the bitterly-fought England v Australia semi-final match of the Women’s World Cup.

As workplaces across England ground to a halt, as millions watched the match on TV, the heart-tugging film featured Kylie reading the lyrics to her 1987 international smash hit ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, cleverly transposing a teenage rumination on love into anticipation of winning a football match.

In my imagination there is no complication
I dream about you all the time
In my mind a celebration, the sweetest of sensation
Thinking you could be mine

In the event the match proved not so lucky for Kylie’s countrywomen and England emerged victorious with a 3-1 win. It means they will face Spain in the final this coming Sunday (August 20).

The BBC’s selection of Kylie for the intro to the match reflects her increasingly high profile since the runaway international success of ‘Padam Padam’ released by BMG. Earlier this week she added a further 10 dates to her sold-out Las Vegas residency due to take place in November.

BMG will release Tension, her 16th studio album, on September 22.
