Broken Flames Productions today announces that ‘Bibimbap for One’ by Daniel Kaszas has been chosen as the winning finalist of the Lucas A. Ferrara Film Fund.

The fund was announced by Variety back in July as a new way for emerging writers to get their scripts read by an expert panel, with the winner getting their project financed and produced.

Out a total of 85 submissions, the winning script, ‘Bibimbap for One’ was written by Daniel Kaszas and explores the topics of depression, suicide and dealing with the loss of a loved one. The story is centred around food and what it can mean to some, as well as how important it is to find joy in the smallest of things, like sharing dinner with a stranger. Daniel states that “Sharing my stories and listening to those of others made me realise that what I was going through was a very human experience and that I wasn't alone. Being a writer has become my way of sharing these experiences. I know that there are people who will appreciate seeing this story being told and, above anything else, that is the reason why I decided to tell it.”

‘Bibimbap for One’ follows Hana, who after the passing of her mother, struggles to enjoy the dishes that she used to have as a child. An unusual encounter with an elderly neighbour, Bernard, disrupts her plans for the rest of the day, and as they form a bond, the old man unknowingly helps Hana put things into perspective.

On the first ever fund winner, Lucas A. Ferrara says, “What an honor it was to review the work of so many talented writers. And it is unfortunate we are unable to work with them all; particularly now, in this time of crisis and uncertainty. While it is our hope to afford additional creatives a voice, we cannot do it alone. Members of the industry must band together to offer more opportunities to representatives of underrepresented communities. And there is no better time, than now. My thanks to Ella Greenwood, Maya Bartley O’Dea, and our esteemed panelists, for their invaluable assistance in helping to select the finalist. And congratulations to Daniel Kaszas for his compelling screenplay. “Bibimbap For One,” stood out as a heart-warming, inspirational piece, and we look forward to bringing it to the screen.”

Ella Greenwood, Founder & CEO of Broken Flames adds “It was such a wonderful opportunity getting to read the scripts by so many talented writers. My thanks to Lucas for his continued support of creatives, and to Daniel for writing such an important piece. We cannot wait to get started on making this film.”
