The UK pioneers the way in the resurgence of the global music industry, as maverick music doyens join forces to create a dynamic new world-wide networking conference to replace the loss of MIDEM – the Music International Cannes (MICANNES), kicks off in Cannes from Tuesday 7 June for a four-day event. MICANNES has been planned by a cutting-edge committee of x19 industry experts, including industry music lawyer - Ian Penman, Artist Manager & Promoter - Ben Steadman, Publishers Jay Mistry and John Saunderson, supported by PRS Chairman Nigel Elderton and many others spanning the spectrum of industry disciplines from production, label management, legal, publishing, artist management, distribution, A&R and communications.
MIDEM would have been 55 years old this year, and has been widely renowned as the stalwart networking event for the global music industry since 1967. However, the pandemic saw that vital network turn virtual in 2019, with a sad cancelling of the event by Reed in 2021. But as the UK defies COVID, the mighty muscle of British music wasn’t going to be held down for long, as veteran influencers within the industry join forces to raise the phoenix from the ashes – MICANNES is born. MICANNES promises to be a fresh, vibrant alternative conference to kickstart an invigorated post-pandemic platform for the music industry internationally.
“The pandemic sent the industry into a slumber, it’s time for those at the cutting edge of decision making to get back on the horse…” comments Penman. “Face to face networking has always been a key facet of the creative industries and the prospect of losing MIDEM permanently was unthinkable. We decided to act and prevent the ball being dropped in 2022, continuing the Midem/Cannes tradition. We’re keeping an international music business networking, and artist showcase event in play, for the sake of our future music industry. MICANNES is an event for all. We are hoping to meet up with the Mayor of Cannes in June, and trying to ensure that this becomes an annual event, proving that music is back in business, in person, as before.”
MICANNES goes back to the roots of the original MIDEM and is all about the music, freedom of access, focussed networking and showcase events. A three-day conference, showcasing the best of burgeoning talent and industry networking, MICANNES is open to all stakeholders within the industry internationally.
