Quiet by your side is Philadelphia-based artist Jude Flannery’s solo debut. The album explores the themes of connection and expectation. Joined by primary collaborators Matt Barrick (The Walkmen, Muzz) on drums / percussion and Quentin Stoltzfus (Mazarin, Light Heat) on bass and guitar, the record has a psychedelic folk rock vibe. Additional collaborators include Robbie Bennett (The War on Drugs) on keyboards, Keir Neuringer (The Irreversible Entanglements) on saxophone, Zena Kay on pedal steel, and Annie Nero on backing vocals. The overall mix is warm and dynamic, a credit to the craft and production contributions of Barrick, who recorded and mixed the record, and Stoltzfus, who mastered the record at Philadelphia’s Silent Partner recording studio.

Today, Flannery shares the record's second single, "Don't mind you asking."

Speaking on the track, Flannery wrote:

"This is the first song I recorded with Matt and Quentin at Silent Partner studio. This song explores the idea that sometimes we can only hear and feel our way through moments. That feels very relevant to times we are living through right now. This song expands on the palette of natural and warm sounds featured on other parts of the record. From Matt’s gentle and distinctive percussion to Quentin’s laid back but uplifting bass groove, it creates space for a mix of other sounds, such as reflective piano notes by Robbie, calming vocal harmonies by Annie and my occasional distorted baritone guitar."

On the track's accompanying video, director Marc Zajack wrote:

"The video for Don’t mind you asking explores the special feeling of going on a journey. Based on documentation from a time when our phones were less prominent in our lives, the video aims to reflect upon the moments where natural connection is accentuated and embraced."

Quiet by your side is due September 20th.

About

Jude Flannery Bio:

Ever since arriving in New York City in 1992, Jude Flannery has been writing original music from bedroom and basement spaces. His songwriting focuses on simple structures with blues inspired extensions and gritty, heartfelt vocals. His lyrics express a desire to connect while acknowledging the space in between where our differences lie. Central to his songwriting, Flannery relies on collaboration with other musicians to help challenge his own ideas to be better. Over his time in New York from 1995 through 2019, Flannery has been singer and / or guitarist for bands Closer, Knocked Out Loaded, Qatsi, and Frozen Falls. The most recent album he released was with Frozen Falls, I promise you pyramids, released in the Fall of 2017. A move to Philadelphia in 2019 began a collaboration that helped create Quiet by your side. This album marks Flannery’s solo debut but continues the themes he has explored in his music from the beginning.

Collaboration Bio:

In the summer of 1992, Jude Flannery took a bus from Cleveland to New York City with only a large knapsack and an acoustic guitar. While attending Columbia University, Flannery played shows with a shoegaze band, Closer, in the basement of the student center, also known as The Plex. That’s where he first saw Jonathan Fire*Eater play. The raw energy of that show made an impression on him. Matt Barrick (The Walkmen, Muzz) was on drums that night, and they briefly met when their bands played at an outdoor concert upstate later that year. More than 25 years later, their paths crossed again when mutual friend Quentin Stoltzfus (Mazarin, Light Heat) reached out to Flannery about recording at Silent Partner, where both he and Barrick are partners. The three gathered for three days in the summer of 2021 and put down four songs that became the basis for Flannery’s debut record. The design of Silent Partner kept the collaboration in the flow and the vintage gear in the studio gave the songs a unique vibe. The acoustic guitar from that NYC bus trip also makes a debut in the song “Four chords”, the third single from the record.
