5 Seconds of Summer have joked that they will play this year's MTV VMAs wearing just socks.

The band will hit the stage at the awards ceremony on August 24 in California.

The show has often been risque in nature, with Miley Cyrus grabbing headlines last year for her frenzied twerking.

In a short video shot by MTV in promotion of their appearance at the event, 5 Seconds of Summer asked how nude they can go on the night.

Luke Hemmings said: "We're just going to wear socks."

Ashton Irwin added: "A singular sock. Just to cut costs."
