BBC Comedy confirms Bafta winning Fleabag will return to BBC Three in 2019

Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the BBC have announced today that award winning international hit comedy Fleabag will return for a second series in 2019.

Speaking at Edinburgh Television Festival, Waller-Bridge was in conversation with BBC Controller of Comedy, Shane Allen on a panel discussing the creation of the hugely successful comedy, and confirmed that a much anticipated second series will be coming to BBC Three.

The multi-award winning comedy written by Waller-Bridge swept the board at ceremonies in 2016 and 2017, winning a Bafta, Royal Television Society, British Press Guild, Broadcast and even NME Awards.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge says: “I asked myself if Fleabag has more to say and frankly she hasn’t shut up since. Series two will be a whole new adventure, and I’m beyond thrilled to be coming back.”

Shane Allen says: “Fleabag signalled the arrival of a hugely distinctive writer with the mesmerising performing talent to match. Phoebe’s career has shot up like a firework display in the last year and the show has been rightly hailed as a modern classic. It’ll be thrilling to see where she takes the character in the next series.”

The first series was adapted from Waller-Bridges’ award-winning play, and saw Fleabag, a dry-witted, angry, cash-strapped, grief-riddled, porn-watching young woman trying to come to terms with a recent tragedy.

Details of the second series are currently under wraps, but the story’s likely to follow Fleabag through many more outrageous exploits.
The first series also starred Brett Gelman (American Dad!, Twin Peaks), Olivia Colman (Broadchurch, The Night Manager), Bill Paterson (The Rebel, Outlander), Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered), Hugh Skinner (Harlots, Poldark), Jamie Demetriou (Paddington 2, People Time), Jenny Rainsford (The Favourite, The Smoke),and Sian Clifford (Fry-Up, Paddy).

The series is commissioned for BBC Three by Damian Kavanagh, Controller BBC Three, Shane Allen, Controller of BBC Comedy and the commissioning editor is Kate Daughton. It is produced by Two Brothers Pictures. The executive producers are Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Jack and Harry Williams, and Lydia Hampson is series producer.

Two Brothers Pictures say: “Obviously we couldn't be more excited to be working with the ridiculously talented Phoebe again, and we can't wait to see what the next chapter in Fleabag’s life brings...”

Fleabag is a Two Brothers Pictures production in association with DryWrite for the BBC. All3media international is Two Brothers Pictures’ international partner, handling global sales for Fleabag.
