Katie Melua updates Pressparty about her new album 'Secret Symphony'

Katie Melua is one of the top female artists of the last decade, selling millions of records and gaining legions of fans across the the world.

The sultry singer is bringing out new album 'Secret Symphony' on March 5 and we caught up with her for a quick chat to find out more.

The soon to be released 'Secret Symphony' is your fifth album. Do you feel like you're getting better with age?

Yes, I guess I do. Each album represents a window into your life at the point you make it and obviously experience gives you so much.

Tell us more about the album - will it see a change in direction from your previous work?

I did a concert in Germany with the Stuttgart Philharmonic a couple of years ago and singing with an orchestra was the best feeling in the world. I've wanted to make an album inspired by an orchestra for a long time since then.

What sort of themes are running lyrically through the album?

Love is the biggest theme – it's such a universal subject and I can draw so much from my experiences to tap into the emotions when singing the songs.

You were originally brought up in Georgia, before moving to Britain. How much of that do you think comes through in your music?

Georgian music is very emotional, so I am definitely influenced by my culture when I make my music. One day I would love to make a Georgian album.

We live in an age where things like TV talent shows dominate the UK music scene. Do you reckon you are antidote to that?

Only in so much that I came into it through a different route. I think the TV talent shows are great for artists who want to just sing. If you want to be a writer as well, the TV talent route is a very difficult route to take.

Who is floating your boat musically at the moment? Is there anyone you would love to collaborate with?

The National are fantastic, but I would love to work with the legendary Leonard Cohen.

You've sold millions of albums and have enjoyed a successful career so far. Where do you find the motivation to keep on doing what you do? Some people may just rest on their laurels and give up...

I love making music and I can't see myself stopping any time soon.

What do you think the next few years hold for Katie Melua - is there a grand plan?

I don't really make grand plans - I like to see what life throws my way.
