One Direction set for 'special appearance' at the 2013 MTV VMAs and earn nomination

It has been announced the UK based boyband One Direction will be putting in a special appearance at this year's MTV VMAs, which will take place later this month in New York.

MTV announced this afternoon that the 'What Makes You Beautiful' lads will be presenting a prize at the awards ceremony on August 25 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

One Direction have also been nominated in an exciting new socially-driven category for Best Song of the Summer, which is described as pitting "six of the season's hottest tracks against each other in a battle for summer supremacy."

The lads earned their nomination for 'Best Song Ever' and will go head-to-head with the likes of Miley Cyrus ('We Can't Stop'), Robin Thicke ('Blurred Lines'), Daft Punk ('Get Lucky'), Selena Gomez ('Come & Get It'), and Ellie Goulding and Calvin Harris ('I Need Your Love').

Fans can vote through Twitter, Instagram or Vine by using the appropriate hashtag: #votemiley, #votedaftpunk, #voteselena, #voteonedirection, #votethicke or #votecalvinandellie.

Performers at this year's event include Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.
