Queen man's plea to spare hedgehogs

Animal rights supporter, blogger and Queen guitarist, Brian May, is hoping to save the lives of Britain's unsuspecting hedgehogs on Guy Fawkes Night.

The annual celebration on November 5 involves building and igniting outdoor fires, as well as staging spectacular fireworks displays.

In a post on his website, May says: "If you are accumulating brushwood or branches and boxes, ready for your Guy Fawkes Night bonfire, please don't accumulate it where the bonfire will actually be. This is exactly the time when our small spiky native hedgehogs are looking for a sheltered place to hibernate through the winter months".

May continues: "It's all too easy to miss the fact that your early-prepared bonfire pile might have some small visitors hiding within it. So! Please be careful ... it's better bonfire technique anyway to build the pile on the day of burning it ... give those hedgehogs a chance to run off to a safer place!".
