Annette Bening on ‘Apples Never Fall’ Giving Her a Sense of Creativity

Apples Never Fall, a new short series based on Liane Moriarty's New York Times bestselling novel, debuted earlier this month on Peacock.

The show stars Sam Neill, Annette Bening and Alison Brie, and tells the story of the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family, whose lives are forever changed when a wounded young woman knocks on their door.

Annette Bening, known for her filmography and recently honored with an Oscar nomination for her performance in Nyad, explained to Variety that being able to portray a character through a series of episodes rather than in a single film was a different experience for her creatively:

“Having seven hours to tell a story was new to me and tweaking it along the way and having a sense of creativity as we went.”

Bening also spoke about her role as Executive Producer on Apples Never Fall, adding that the artistic freedom to tweak things as needed is empowering:

“I don’t know that it was that much different for me because I always feel an investment in things. And also I’ve never felt like I wasn’t listened to when I wanted to be listened to on a job. Maybe when I was younger, it didn’t even occur to me be like, ‘Oh, I should speak up’ and say, ‘This part of the script just doesn’t work.’ I didn’t feel it was my place, but now I do.”
