Martin Garrix scores debut UK No. 1 single with 'Animals'

Seventeen-year-old Dutch DJ, Martin Garrix, arrives at the top of the Official Singles Chart today with debut single 'Animals'.

After scoring a Top 10 hit with Animals across the continent over the summer, Garrix follows the lead of last week’s chart topper Storm Queen in delivering the UK’s biggest selling record of the week, and a dancefloor smash to boot.

Garrix tells OfficialCharts.com “I didn't expect this success at all! I made Animals as a club record and seeing it chart so high worldwide and especially a Number 1 in the UK was really beyond my expectations. I will definitely celebrate this with my parents, friends and at school!"

At 17, Garrix becoming the second youngest star to top the Official Singles Chart this year after New Zealand singer/songwriter Lorde whose track 'Royals' reached No. 1 three weeks ago while she was just 16.

Lily Allen’s delicate cover of Keane’s 'Somewhere Only We Know' is new in at No. 2 today. The track features in the new ‘Bear and The Hare’ John Lewis Christmas TV ad campaign which launched last weekend, and has closed the gap across the week on Garrix, trailing by less than 12,000 copies at the final whistle. Keane’s 2004 original version of the track also climbs an incredible 74 places to re-enter today’s Top 40 at No. 29.

Ellie Goulding’s 'How Long Will I Love You?', the official single of BBC’s Children In Need 2013, is at No. 3 on today’s Official Singles Chart Update.

Eminem’s former chart topper, 'The Monster' ft. Rihanna, retreats two places to No. 4, while Little Mix complete this week’s Top 5 with 'Move'.

Lady Gaga and R. Kelly debut at No. 9 on the Official Singles Chart with 'Do What U Want', the second single to be released from this week’s new No. 1 album 'ARTPOP'. Robbie Williams is fresh in at No. 10 with 'Go Gentle', which is taken from his tenth album 'Swings Both Ways' (out November 18).

The Poppy Girls land at No. 13 with their cover of Regina Spektor’s 'The Call (No Need To Say Goodbye)'. The track has been released as part of the Royal British Legion's annual Poppy Appeal and the girls – Megan, Florence, Alice, Bethany and Charlotte – each have a parent currently serving in the British armed forces.

One place behind is pop superstar Celine Dion who makes a welcome return with her highest charting single in the UK in over a decade; following a flurry of high profile UK TV appearances in the past 10 days, 'Loved Me Back To Life' (No. 14), the title track from the her new album, shoots up 61 places to break into the Top 20 at No. 14. The album from which it is taken debuts at No. 3 today over on the Official Albums Chart. Here’s a reminder of Celine’s official biggest selling singles here in the UK.

And finally, The Killers’ 'Shot At The Night' - one of the new tracks recorded for their best of collection, Direct Hits – enters at 23 today, while 'All Bad' (No. 34) brings Justin Bieber his sixth Top 40 hit in as many weeks.
