Justin Bieber breaks Official Charts history with first ever UK No.1

Canadian superstar Justin Justin Bieber makes a triumphant return to the Official Singles Chart today (September 4) as 'What Do You Mean' becomes his first-ever UK No.1 and sets an impressive new streaming record.

The song, which he performed live at the VMAs last week, lands straight in at the top and earns the highest first-week streams for a single ever in the UK, the Official Charts Company can confirm, racking up 3.2 million plays in its opening week across chart-reporting streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music and more.

The feat smashes the record set by One Direction last month, who racked up 2.03 million plays in the opening week of the release of their latest single, 'Drag Me Down'.

'What Do You Mean' is also Bieber’s fastest selling single in the UK with a combined sales total of 84,000, beating his previous best of 55,000 with 2012’s No.2-peaking 'Boyfriend'.

Meanwhile, last week’s chart-topper 'Fight Song' by Rachel Platten slips to 2, The Weeknd’s 'Can’t Feel My Face' returns to its chart peak at No.3, Calvin Harris & Disciples’ 'How Deep Is Your Love' holds at No.4, and Jess Glynne’s 'Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself' completes the Top 5.

Demi Lovato earns her fourth Top 10 single and is this week’s biggest climber with 'Cool For The Summer', vaulting 105 places to No.7, 5 Seconds Of Summer zoom 47 places to No.14 with 'She’s Kinda Hot' following the track’s physical release.

Labrinth’s 'Jealous' re-enters at 25 following its outing on last week’s X Factor, Little Mix are new at 35 with 'Hair', and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis debut at No.37 with their new single 'Downtown'.
