Kelly Clarkson happy to see Jane Austen ring stay in Britain after buy-out

A campaign to stop Kelly Clarkson buying a ring once owned by Jane Austen and taking it to America has been successful.

And the singer said she is "happy" to see the antique piece of jewellery stay in its country of origin.

The American Idol star won the ring at auction last year for more than £150,000 ($227,000). However, UK culture minister Ed Vaizey put a temporary export ban on the piece, believing that it should stay in Britain.

Jane Austen's House Museum launched a campaign to match the bid and keep the ring in the country - and they confirmed today (September 23) that they were successful.

They received a £100,000 pound donation from an anonymous donor, as well as contributions from other Austen fans.

Speaking about the rare piece of jewellery, an accepting Clarkson said: "The ring is a beautiful national treasure and I am happy to know that so many Jane Austen fans will get to see it at Jane Austen's House Museum."
