Green Day and Lou Reed to enter Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Green Day and Lou Reed are among the newly announced additions to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The acts will be honoured at the induction ceremony at Cleveland's Public Hall on April 18.

They are joined by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Bill Withers and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr will pick up the Award For Musical Excellence whilst 1950s group The "5" Royales will get the Early Influence Award.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong commented: "I had to go for a walk when I heard the news. We're in incredible company and I'm still trying to make sense of this.

"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has always held something special for me because my heroes were in there. This is a great time for us to sort of reflect and look back with gratitude."

The late Lou Reed meanwhile was inducted in 1996 as part of the Velvet Underground, but he will posthumously receive the honour for his solo work.
