British PM David Cameron congratulates One Direction and co. on global success

British Prime Minister David Cameron has praised the likes of One Direction for helping the UK music market achieve global success.

Newly released figures show that British artists have enjoyed their highest ever share of global album sales, accounting for 13.3% of worldwide transactions in 2012.

This figure has been boosted by the likes of pop group One Direction, '21' star Adele and Mumford & Sons.

Speaking about British acts' success, David Cameron said:

"We should be extremely proud of how our world-leading music industry continues to go from strength to strength, with a record share of the global market and with British acts having the world’s top selling album for five of the last six years."

He added: “British music is enjoyed across the world and we will keep backing our creative industries that support jobs, create opportunities and contribute to the economy.”

BPI Chief Executive, Geoff Taylor meanwhile said: “As music goes digital, Britain has the potential to be even more successful, connecting instantly with fans who love our music wherever they may live.  The time is right for Government to back innovative businesses like music that can lead the economy back to growth."

One Direction's two albums - 'Up All Night' and 'Take Me Home' - were among the five top selling albums in the world last year.
