Shakira knew Rihanna duet video was going to be "controversial"

Shakira presumed her recent video with Rihanna would be "controversial".

The sultry singer teamed up with the 'Stay' star for the single 'Can't Remember to Forget You' and its steamy video raised eyebrows.

Shakira and Rihanna were seen cavorting in bed together and the former told Ryan Seacrest that she knew the clip would create debate.

However. the 'The Hips Don't Lie' star didn't realise how many people would actually watch it. She said:

"[The video] was going to be a little controversial...I knew...people would be interested especially because Rihanna is so big, but these numbers are unbelievable."

A politician from Shakira's native Colombia meanwhile took to Twitter to protest against the video, saying that it promoted "lesbianism" and was a danger to children.

Public Option party councillor Marco Fidel Ramirez said: "Our Shakira with her erotic video is promoting tobacco usage and has become the worst example for our youth. Shakira's new video is a shameless case for lesbianism and immorality. It is a danger to children. It sends a provocative message to weak people who can be polluted and induced to practice [lesbianism]."
