Q&A with Moira and Aljaž

How are you feeling about being a part of the Strictly Christmas special?

Moira: I am still amazed. I am so excited and grateful to have Aljaž beside me to teach me to dance, he is just magnificent.

Aljaž: I am beside myself that I get to dance with the legend that is Moira Stuart. I have seen you on the TV since I came to the UK, and now to get to dance with you is surreal!

What made you want to take part?

Moira: I have watched Strictly from the beginning, I have been asked before and I always thought I couldn’t do it, my approach to dancing is so visceral. Then I thought, let’s have some fun and challenge myself.

What did your friends and family say?

Moira: I have only told my two sisters, they are both abroad, and simultaneously they were silent! I think in shock!

Tell us about your partnership, what’s training been like?

Moira: To be brutally truthful, Aljaž has made it less arduous than I expected, he has made it fun, which is tremendous. My problem is, I can only react to him and the music, the counting doesn’t mean anything to me!

Aljaž: I am a bit like her Metronome! From day one, it has been great, I love that we are doing a salsa, it is so groovy. We have Cameron too, who is playing Santa in our routine, he is one of the best Santa Claus’ I have ever seen.

How do you feel about being ‘Strictly-fied’ festive style?

Moira: That has been the easiest part! It has been a giggle and delicious, I am wearing something I thought I would never ever wear, it is out of my comfort zone and I love it!

What would you buy each other for Christmas?

Moira: I think as a giggle I would give him a tiny elf hat to remember me by.

Aljaž: I would give her a beautiful pair of ballroom shoes, so in the new year she could go and boogie a little bit, I think she’d love it.

How do you rate your chances of being crowned Christmas champions? Who do you think your biggest competition is?

Moira: Oh everyone! From what I am seeing, I am jealous as hell! One thing I have missing in me is a competitive bone, to me it is a giggle, I just want to enjoy it!

Aljaž: I will say it for both of us, the only right thing this Christmas will be looking at that trophy!

How do you rate yourself as a dancer?

Moira: I was dancing out of my mother’s womb, I have been dancing forever. Now Aljaž has given me a new dimension, and I will hold onto that with everything.

What’s your favourite Christmas movie and why?

Moira: It’s A Wonderful Life. It’s gorgeous.

Aljaž: I am going slightly different, with Elf. It just puts a smile on my face, and that is who I am playing in the dance too.

What song gets you up dancing at festive parties?

Aljaž: Last Christmas by Wham, or anything that Mariah Carey or Michael Bublé sing!

Moira: I just love Nat King Cole.

Brussel sprouts - yay or nay?

Moira: Oh no. I was addicted to brussel sprouts, with a little bacon, delicious. I once gorged on them, and they repeated on me in the most extraordinary way, so now I haven’t had them for a while.

Aljaž: I’d never really fully tried them before coming to the UK, it has a very particular taste, it’s a bit aggressive for me.

Best and worst Christmas present you ever received?

Aljaž: We do Secret Santa on Strictly. One year Neil got me a football shirt signed by Lionel Messi, everyone else was getting Lynx Africa gift sets, and I was over the moon!

Moira: My first teddy bear, I will never forget that.

Which judge are you most keen to impress?

Moira: Any of them! Please someone! If Craig gives me any point at all, I will be very grateful. I am in love with Anton! And with the ladies… please give me pity!

What are the Christmas traditions in your household? How will you be spending Christmas Day this year?

Aljaž: I am hoping to go home to Slovenia to see my nieces, one of who I haven’t met yet as she is 10 months old. So I am hoping that is possible.

Moira: My Christmas will be quiet this year, but my sister is a fabulous cook and she makes this wonderful cauliflower soup, which I usually fill up on before the main turkey dinner.

Any new year’s resolutions? Will you be taking your new found dancing skills into the new year?

Moira: Definitely! Other than that, I want health and happiness for everyone.

Aljaž: That’s lovely. I don’t normally believe in them, but I think the world can always be kinder, so I am going to try to make someone’s day, every day.
