The BBC Commissioning Supply Report published today showcases a year of creative excellence, in which the BBC won more than 150 awards across TV and Radio.

The BBC commissioned more original content in this year than the year before, and continued to drive its ambitions across the UK; significantly growing TV commissioning spend in the Nations and English regions, now at nearly 60%, and strengthening its audio bases, including a new home for Science in Cardiff and the start of BBC Asian Network’s relocation to Birmingham.

The BBC has invested in supporting talent and skills – from entry-level training, to growing the next wave of development talent in entertainment and writers in scripted – and driving pan-broadcaster initiatives to ensure our industry is accessible to all.

The BBC has also supported production companies through growth funding and mentoring, all of which delivered strong outcomes – with more than £1 million of investment going to small companies through our TV Small Indie Fund and Radio Indie Development Fund.

2022/23 report highlights include:

• 58% of our Network TV commissioning spend was outside of London and we worked with 30 new TV producers based in the Nations and English regions

• We worked with 351 TV production companies and 166 Radio suppliers

• 65 of the TV indies we worked with were new to the BBC

• 79% of the companies on the TV Small Indie Fund were based outside London and 52% were diverse-led

• We funded ideas development with 258 companies

• We invested in over 40 schemes, initiatives and bursaries to grow the next generation of TV talent, with 2/3rds outside London, and Radio supported over 80 new and emerging on and off-screen talent

• 652 of our TV productions were albert certified, building on our commitment to sustainable production

• We continued to work with a wide range of partners and our £500k investment in the North East has already resulted in over 60 production placements, four companies in funded ideas development and the successful piloting of BBC Comedy’s regional partnership scheme

• This Is Going To Hurt – 5 awards in total including Writer, Drama Series, Best Supporting Female and Best Actress for Ambika Mod and Ben Whishaw for Best Actor at the Broadcasting Press Guild.

• Mood – Best Original Programme at The Broadcast Awards 2023 and Limited Series at RTS Programme Awards

• Traitors – 3 wins across RTS Programme Awards and Broadcasting Press Guild.

• The Real Mo Farah – won Best Documentary Programme at The Broadcast Awards and Best Documentary Mini at The BPG.

Radio:

• Colouring in Britain - Tommy Dixon / BBC Sounds Audio Lab (ARIAS Gold for Best New Podcast)

• Craig Charles - Audio Always for BBC Radio 6 Music (ARIAS Gold for Best Music Entertainment Show)

• BBC’s Disinformation Correspondent, Mariana Spring, named Best Audio Presenter at the British Press Guild this year for her three-part series War on Truth, Death by Conspiracy and Disaster Trolls

• Gangster: the Story of Curtis Warren(S2), BBC Radio 5 Live & BBC Sounds (New York Radio Awards Gold for Best Sound)

• BBC Radio 4 – ARIAS Gold for UK Station or Network of the Year
