Lawyer and campaigner Aamer Anwar has revealed that, in hotly-anticipated new BBC docuseries The Firm, he will “touch upon the demons that drove [him] to become a lawyer” for the first time.

The ground-breaking series follows Aamer – one of the UK’s most prolific lawyers – and his team during the busiest year of his career, providing a captivating insight into the inner-workings of a high-pressured law practice.

The Firm’s focus on the personalities behind the designer three-piece suits and high heels is akin to a real-life version of hit US legal drama Suits – with the Manhattan setting swapped for Glasgow, where Aamer’s company is based.

And Aamer – widely known across the country for his “suited, tough guy exterior” – claims the show “has succeeded in getting under [his] skin”. Poignant moments in the series see the lawyer recall his own childhood trauma, as well as the harrowing racist attack on him by police which led to him winning his first legal battle and completely altered the course of his life.

Across eight episodes, The Firm follows Aamer as he represents the family of Sheku Bayoh – described as “Scotland’s George Floyd” – at the public inquiry into his death in police custody, as well as the Scottish Covid Bereaved at both the Scottish Covid-19 Inquiry and the UK Covid-19 Inquiry – the biggest public inquiry in British history.

The series also showcases the camaraderie of Aamer’s loyal and hard-working team, all united by one goal: to challenge injustice at every turn.

The Firm launches on the BBC Scotland channel at 9pm and all episodes land on BBC iPlayer on Sunday, October 8.
