In the same year West Germany won the FIFA World Cup, Doris Day had the biggest-selling UK single, and Winston Churchill was Prime Minister of the UK, BBC Sports Personality of the Year was born. This December, the biggest awards show in the sporting calendar celebrates 70 years.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023 is taking place on Tuesday 19 December from the home of BBC Sport in Media City, Salford. BBC Sport’s most well-known and loved faces – Gary Lineker, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott – will present the programme live on BBC One and iPlayer from 7pm-9pm.

All the action from the red carpet, including exclusive interviews with nominees and highlights from the programme, will also be available on the BBC Sport website, app and across social media.

From the Lionesses making it to the FIFA Women’s World Cup final, to Europe taking home the Ryder Cup; 2023 kept the nation on the edge of their seats with BBC Sport at the heart of the action. We celebrated success at the World Athletic Championships with team GB and enjoyed events on home soil with the men’s and women’s Ashes and UCI Cycling World Championships taking place in the UK. England came nail-bitingly close in the semi-final of the men’s Rugby World Cup, plus Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City secured the treble – the only team to do so since Manchester United’s class of ‘99.

Once again, there will be eight categories celebrating the biggest and best sporting achievements and talent from 2023. These are:

• Sports Personality of the Year
• World Sport Star of the Year
• Helen Rollason award
• Young Sports Personality of the Year
• Unsung Hero
• Coach of the Year
• Team of the Year
• Lifetime Achievement award

Tickets to the event are available to the public via the BBC Shows and Tours website. Viewers at home can also get involved and make their voices heard by voting for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner on the evening.

Director of BBC Sport, Barbara Slater, says:“I’m so proud of the crucial role BBC Sport has played in bringing audiences a wonderful and thrilling year of sport on TV, radio and online - there will be so much to celebrate on the evening.

“What will make this year’s awards even more special is that we are marking 70 years of the programme. Over the last seven decades the public has decided who its sporting heroes are, from grassroots to professional, and that’s what makes Sports Personality of the Year so important.”

The contenders for the 2023 Sports Personality of the Year will be announced in due course.
