Olly Alexander has launched his brand new single Dizzy, which is the song that will be representing the United Kingdom later this year, in May, at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.

Olly Alexander says: “I wrote the song last summer with Danny L Harle, we started off with the word ‘Dizzy’ because it just popped into my head and I liked it. I was thinking about fun things that could make you dizzy and I remember saying “dizzy from your kisses” so the song is about feeling such an intense swell of emotion for someone they totally turn your world upside down and inside out.

"Danny and I believe music should transport you somewhere magical and we wanted to describe this magical place in the song; a place of beautiful gardens, eternal flowers and time turning endlessly in an ecstatic loop. We took the feeling of Dizziness and put that into the production, so there’s a lot of undulating arpeggios, lilting harmonies and counter rhythms in the backing vocals. We were inspired by a lot of music we love from the 80’s like Erasure, Adamski and of course Pet Shop Boys.”

Dizzy is written by Olly and seminal electronic producer Danny L Harle, and the music video was directed by Colin Solal Cardo.

Dizzy marks a dynamic new era from Olly Alexander. Across three hugely successful albums, the singer, actor and fashion icon has scored 2 #1 UK albums, 10 UK Top 40 singles and was recently awarded the BRIT Billion Award (with 6.5 billion streams globally).

With Years & Years evolving into a solo project and, beginning with Dizzy, a brand new creative chapter, Olly has become a once-in-a-generation voice: the Russell T Davies show It's A Sin won Best New Drama at the National Television Awards, with Olly also nominated for Leading Actor at the 2022 BAFTA Television Awards.

Having headlined arenas and festivals worldwide - not to mention collaborating with the likes of Sir Elton John, Kylie, and Pet Shop Boys - Olly Alexander's icon-status recently saw him immortalised at Madame Tussauds London: a fitting home for a pop star who has helped change British culture forever, and now represents the UK on the stage of childhood-dreams.

BBC One and BBC iPlayer will air an exclusive special at 10.40pm on Friday 1 March, Eurovision 2024: Graham meets Olly, where Eurovision legend Graham Norton sits down with Olly, for a one on one chat about the upcoming much loved contest. Olly talks candidly to Graham about the upcoming competition. And as an extra treat for Eurovision fans, Olly will reveal the first full play of the music video on TV for his Eurovision song.

The contest itself will take place in Malmö, Sweden following the country's victory at the 2023 contest with the song "Tattoo" by Loreen. Sweden are guaranteed a place in the final due to their victory at last year’s contest, alongside the Big Five countries (United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, Italy) meaning the United Kingdom does not have to qualify from the semi-final stage of the competition and will gain automatic access to the Saturday Grand Final.

The Semi Finals will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Tuesday 7 and Thursday 9 May at 8pm, and the Grand Final which will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Saturday 11 May from 8pm. Plus the Grand Final will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.

The BBC’s Eurovision Song Contest 2024 coverage is a BBC Studios Entertainment production, commissioned by Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC. The Executive Producers are Andrew Cartmell and Lee Smithurst. The Creative Director for BBC Studios Entertainment North is Pete Ogden and Suzy Lamb is the Managing Director of Entertainment & Music at BBC Studios.
