Katie, 23, Newcastle, Northern Ireland

Have you ever boxed before?

I grew up with five brothers and they were into boxing, but they never let me box as I was a girl! But I am into fitness. I did a degree in sport and exercise in Liverpool and fitness helps me mentally.

What did your family think about you taking part?

My family thought I was mad to apply, but at the same time they weren’t that surprised I wanted to do something different! My mum was very supportive and told me to go for it. When I found out I would be going into the house, I was so pleased.

How was it arriving as a late entry when everyone had already formed a bond?

It was tough going in, because I was at my starting point whereas everyone else was at the middle point. I arrived on a massive buzz to train. Everyone else had built up their fitness and I was obviously thrown in (at the deep end). But after a few days you get used to it. It was nerve-wracking doing the first set of punching. You don’t know if you’re going to be able to hit someone.

How did you find the nutritional aspect when it comes to boxing?

I was intrigued to see what we would be eating. Initially it was difficult because I don’t like vegetables. But doing this programme has had a positive impact, I now eat broccoli at home!

How did you find Idris as your mentor?

He was a great, down to earth and easy to talk to. I didn’t see him as a celebrity.

What did you learn about yourself?

It has forced me to be more patient and listen to my body! It also made me realise you need to watch out for any potential injuries. I went to university and lived with strangers, but this was a different environment because we were all different ages with different backgrounds. It was interesting getting to know everyone and it reiterated to me that I can adapt.

What will you take away from Fight School?

I am more determined than ever to open my own gym, one that helps people with their mental health. I have so much experience living with people with mental health issues, including my own. I live in an area where it is hard to find a job. I want to work towards a boxing qualification and Fight School has given me the motivation to succeed.
