How did it feel to join series three of Keeping Faith?

It was a game of two halves. The first block was as ‘normal’ as a block of filming can be. Followed by the second, when we returned after the first lockdown. It was a surreal experience to come back to tell the story when the world around us had gone mad! It was an incredible and bizarre set of circumstances but frightening, exciting and very rewarding.

You play Mike, the father of a very sick boy. What can you tell us about him?

Mike is a young father who has recently lost his wife to cancer. We find him at a point in his life where Osian, his son, is also in hospital and being treated for cancer. We find him in crisis - a part of which is a crisis of his masculinity. What does it mean to be a Welsh man who wasn’t able to save his wife and now might not be able to do the same for his young son? He’s frightened and beyond exhausted. He wants desperately to fight for Osian’s life and to do the right thing, but doesn’t even know what the right thing is anymore.

I think the reason people can relate to Mike is because he is fundamentally human. He’s capable and totally fallible. He’s frightened and stubborn and courageous all at the same time. He makes mistakes but also gets it right and keeps going one day at a time for Osian.

How was coming back to Wales to film the series?

It was the same as it always is! As soon as the train pulls into Wales my shoulders drop and I can breathe again. And then I never want to leave. I should never have left in the first place!

Can you sum up Keeping Faith in a few words?

It’s exciting and funny and heartbreaking.
