Pasha (aged 30) was working as a welder in Belgium when he learnt about the invasion. Against his mum's wishes who asked him to stay safe abroad, Pasha flew over to Poland and back to Ukraine, against the thousands of women and children trying to escape the country.

Pasha says, "I saw people on the border. Almost all of them were girls, ladies and children. There were about 5,000 people. Who can protect them, if not us, who?"

When he stepped onto Ukrainian soil, he knew there would be no way back but Pasha says he does not regret his decision. He wants to support other fellow countrymen and women fighting on the frontline and to stop any future aggression that could put his parents, living right next to the Russian border, in even greater danger.

In the film Pasha receives good news when he learns that his dear friend Ivanka, who's a combat medic, will be joining his same battalion on the frontline.

Pasha says, "I don't know when the war will end, but I'm sure that we will win. It's only a question of time and a question about how many people will die. I hope, of course, that I will survive, but the chances are not so big, that's the truth. It's not hard, if you know what you're fighting for."

About

Stacey Dooley will follow a group of Ukrainian civilians as they arrive in the UK to begin five weeks of intensive army training. With exclusive and unprecedented access to the British Army’s training mission, the recruits will learn to survive and to be lethal, as they prepare for deployment to the frontline fighting against Russia.

Among the young civilians putting their lives on the line, Stacey meets florist and gardener Mykola, who wants to join his family members already on the frontline. He tells Stacey he hopes for victory so that he can marry his girlfriend. For Pasha, a welder who was living abroad when the invasion began, he fears going into battle will mean never seeing his parents again.

Stacey Dooley: Ready For War? airs on BBC Three on Wednesday 12 April at 9pm and will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am the same day.
