• Jessica Hynes, Peter Serafinowicz, Steve Furst, Roger Griffiths, Jo Martin, Martina Laird join series in supporting roles alongside Alexander Owen and Will Hislop

This news follows on from the announcement last September that Dreaming Whilst Black had been commissioned for a full 6-part series following the success of its award-winning, critically acclaimed, “unflinchingly observed” (The Sunday Times) pilot episode which aired in 2021. The six-part series is co-produced by Bafta and Emmy-nominated Big Deal Films (Coconut, Holier Than Thou, Sparklers), and global entertainment company A24 (Beef, Euphoria, Everything Everywhere All At Once), who are handling international sales. This production marks the first UK co-production for A24.

Creator of the series, Adjani Salmon (Doctor Who, Chivalry), has reprised his leading role from the web-series and pilot, alongside Dani Moseley (Everything I Know About Love, Straight Line Crazy) as Amy. The two are joined by Demmy Ladipo (The Last Tree, We Are Lady Parts) as Maurice, Rachel Adedeji (Champion, R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned) as Funmi and babirye bukilwa (We Hunt together, Our Girl) as Vanessa, who all also appeared in the pilot.

Also returning to the full series in supporting roles are Alexander Owen (one half of comedy duo The Pin, Jurassic World Dominion) as Adam, and Will Hislop (Gangs of London, PRU, Grantchester) as Lewis.

They will all be joined throughout the series by Isy Suttie (Peep Show), Peter Serafinowicz (The Tick, Shaun of the Dead), Roger Griffiths (Chef!, Eastenders), Martina Laird (The Little Mermaid, Unforgotten), Jo Martin (Doctor Who, The Crouches), Akemnji Ndifornyen (Famalam, Black Ops), and Steve Furst (The Serpent Queen, Walk Like A Panther) in recurring roles. Jessica Hynes (W1A, There She Goes, Shaun of the Dead) and TV Personality and professional basketball player Ovie Soko will also make guest appearances in the series.

Loosely inspired by real life events, Dreaming Whilst Black tells the story of Kwabena, an aspiring filmmaker stuck in a dead-end recruitment job who takes the first step to achieving his dream. However, he is quickly confronted with the tribulations of balancing finances, love, and his own sense of reality.

Dreaming Whilst Black was commissioned by Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy Commissioning at the BBC and Fiona Campbell, Controller Youth Audience, iPlayer and BBC Three. The Executive Producers are Dhanny Joshi and Thomas Stogdon for Big Deal Films andAdjani Salmon. The series is directed by Jermain Julien, Koby Adom, Sebastian Thiel, and Joelle Mae David and produced by Nicola Gregory. The Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Tanya Qureshi.

The original web series was co-written by Salmon and Ali Hughes and was created by Adjani Salmon, Max Evans, Laura de Sousa Seixas and Natasha Jatania of 4 Quarters Films.

A24 and the BBC are currently developing series adaptations for Douglas Stuart's Shuggie Bain and Yomi Adegoke's The List.
