Los Angeles, CA - November 19, 2015 - Select Hospitality and Design (SH&D) - the hospitality company founded by Matthew Hechter and Christopher Brandon - has enlisted Albert Hammond Jr. (guitarist from The Strokes and acclaimed solo artist) and superstar/SH&D partner Joe Jonas (DNCE, Jonas Brothers)to serve as official music curators for the group's portfolio of properties, which includes The Heyward in Brooklyn, NY and Hinterland, which recently opened in Santa Monica, CA. They will be responsible for all sound design at these locations, including building custom playlists and curating live music experiences, as well as at future SH&D projects. The two musicians have created sampler playlists, which premiered today on Spotify, to highlight some of their first musical selections for SH&D's locations. See below for a list of featured tracks and listening links.
"Music has always been foundational to Select," noted Matthew Hechter. "When we started, Chris and I personally handpicked the music for all of the restaurants because we wanted it to be a core part of the experience. And, all of our projects in development have some sort of major music element attached to them."
"When Matt approached me about curating vibes at his upcoming and existing restaurants, I couldn't help but see it as an awesome opportunity to share music that excites me with a clientele that has a similar passion for new discoveries. We're starting small, but it has the potential to grow into something very unique and multi-faceted. Matt, Chris and the rest of the SH&D team have a wonderful vision," said Albert Hammond Jr.
"I'm honored to join the brilliant team at Select. They're great friends and we share the same vision of creating a welcome, laid-back atmosphere for our guests," commented Joe Jonas.
Hammond Jr. and Jonas will be involved with the design, build and programming of a recording studio that will be part of the group's new boutique hotel concept in Upstate New York. In addition, they will program a slate of acts for the live music venue adjacent to PBLC TRDE, SH&D's Japanese-inspired pizza restaurant in Costa Mesa, CA, which is slated to open before the end of 2015. The pair will also see that music is infused into the culinary experiences that Select will be designing for several major music festivals.
About Select Hospitality and Design (SH&D)
Matthew Hechter and Chris Brandon grew up together in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Going separate ways after high school, the two crossed paths again and joined forces to open successful New York restaurant, Hudson Clearwater with two other partners. Soon after, the duo brought on Marcus Childress and formed Select Hospitality and Design, to continue pursuing new hospitality projects. With extensive design and restaurant experience, Hechter and Brandon serve as managing partners, while Childress utilizes his experience in financial management in his role as CFO. Together, the team opened The Heyward at a Brooklyn site that was formerly home to the iconic music venue Zebulon. In 2015, they opened the popular coastal New American restaurant, Hinterland, located on Main Street in Santa Monica. With several new ventures in the pipeline, Select Hospitality is making a name for itself across the nation.
Albert Hammond Jr. is best known as a guitarist for The Strokes, the gritty NYC-based rock band that bowed in 2001 with the three-song EP The Modern Age and the critically acclaimed debut album Is This It - both of which contained the smash alternative radio hit "Last Night," which is still a staple at the format to this day.Is This It was named the best album of 2001 by TIME and, in 2009, it topped NME's list of the 100 Greatest Albums Of The Decade. The band has won four NME Awards and a BRIT. In addition to his work with The Strokes, Hammond Jr. has released three acclaimed solo albums - Yours To Keep (2006), ¿Cómo Te Llama? (2008) and 2015's Momentary Masters (Vagrant Records) - plus the 2013 EP AHJ. Hammond Jr. is currently touring in support of Momentary Masters, which NME hailed as his "most satisfying" record yet and SPIN praised as "buoyant...full of his instantly recognizable fancy fretwork and his youthful, wistful croon." Momentary Masters - which takes its title from a passage in astronomer Carl Sagan's influential book Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space - is a record about finding a new curiosity in life as a result of the loss of innocence that knowledge and time create. The album's lead single "Losing Touch" was praised by Entertainment Weekly as "classic Strokes (and, as a result, Hammond), complete with a chorus heavy on the vocal distortion."
