Ed Sheeran: 'A fan once said my performance was 'disappointing' because I was drunk'

Today marked the release of Ed Sheeran's exciting illustrated autobiography, 'Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey', in his native UK and MTV has shared a few excerpts from the project with his fans.

In the book, which was illustrated by artist Phillip Butah, Sheeran opens up about the moment he decided never to drink before a live performance again and confessed that it came after a member of his audience told him he had let them down:

"I didn't intend to drink a lot, but I ended up drinking every day, and drinking a lot every day. I wasn't an alcoholic, but I'd drink at gigs and I'd be drunk on stage."

Sheeran goes on to talk about a particular performance he did at The Ivy House in Holborn, London and confessed that he was so intoxicated that it wrecked his set: "I remember doing a show there - a proper show - and I was just f****d. Afterwards, someone came up to me and said, 'That was terrible, really disappointing.'"

He added: "Since I really wanted to be successful, and it obviously doesn't look good if you're stumbling around on stage, I thought, 'I'm never drinking before a gig again'. And I've never drunk before a show since, e ever."
