Manchester Post-Punk band ‘Church Party’ unveil their debut EP ‘Cut The Colours’, the 5-track EP was recorded and produced by Bob Cooper (Jools, Reno & Rome, Love Is Noise).

With an expansive sound that weaves fuzzy punk with catchy pop melodies, Church Party has developed a unique ability to convey raw emotion that reflects the mood of the city they live in. Across the 5-tracks the band touch on themes of sex parties, heartbreak, and recovery, all set behind their hybrid sound of post-punk, sixties pop and fuzzy English grunge.

The lead single off the EP ‘Back In The Room’ highlights this sound. Created after frontman Tommy Stewart visited a friend who had been sectioned. The track is split in two with its sinister verses adopting dissonant guitar lines that clash with funk-infused basslines, representing the nightmare his friend is in. In contrast, the chorus with its sixties-pop influences opts for a more whimsical approach with rich harmonies that reference a sequence of dreams about a breakup.

The band explain the EP further: “Cut The Colours represents our first official release as a band since reforming in 2022, having originally been active from 2014-2016. It represents the culmination of our own hard work that has come off our own backs with our own work and initiative. It's our baby that we are excited to share with the world.”

Having released music since 2014, Church Party gained a cult following in Manchester receiving rave reviews from the likes of DIY Magazine and Gold FlakePaint before suddenly breaking up in 2016 due to frontman Tommy Stewart’s struggles with alcohol, cocaine addiction and his (at that point) secret bisexuality. Since then Tommy got sober with the band making a triumphant return in 2021. ‘Cut The Colours’ is the culmination of that return with Tommy offering a masterclass in vocal gymnastics extracting different emotions in each track as he takes the listener on a sordid journey through his struggles with addiction, depression and sexuality, all while offering up tongue-in-cheek quips and a dynamic musical soundscape.

Church Party are: Matt Downes (guitar), Michael Copp (drums), Richard Stewart (bass and backing vocals), and Tommy Stewart (guitar and lead vocals).‘Cut The Colours’ is available on all streaming platforms along with a limited vinyl run of 100 copies.
