Sam Smith says 'fat' jibes hurt more than homophobic slurs

Sam Smith says being insulted for his weight hurt more than for being gay.

The singer told 60 Minutes Australia that he regularly came under fire for his weight.

The Brit - who has now shed a number of pounds due to a change in diet - said that jibes about being fat were more painful than slurs about his sexuality.

Smith said: "When I was at school and wasn’t having a great time or when music wasn’t going very well. I would eat, eat. Eating would make me feel better; when I felt lonely, I would eat.

"If someone called me fat, that affects me way more than someone calling me [gay]. I think just because I’ve accepted that, if someone calls me a f****t, it’s like, I am gay and I’m proud to be gay, so there’s no issues there."

The singer meanwhile recently paid tribute to nutritionist Amelia Freer after he lost over a stone in just two weeks.
