The Weeknd Wins Big at 2021 Billboard Music Awards

The Weeknd insisted he doesn't take winning awards "for granted" as he won big at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 23. The star-studded ceremony was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and was hosted by Nick Jonas.

The "Save Your Tears" hitmaker - who was snubbed by the Grammys earlier this year - was crowned Top Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top R&B Artist and Top R&B Male Artist.

Smash-hit "Blinding Lights" claimed the Top Hot 100 Song, Top Radio Song and Top R&B Song prizes, and his album After Hours was named Top R&B Album, giving him a total of 10 prizes.

While accepting the Top Artist award, The Weeknd said:  “I do not take this for granted. Thank you.”

The Canadian singer-songwriter beat Drake, Taylor Swift, and the late rappers Juice Wrld and Pop Smoke to take the top honor.

Elsewhere, Pink was the recipient of the Billboard Icon award, Drake was crowned Artist of the Decade and Houston rapper Trae tha Truth nabbed the Change Maker prize. Drake, who also picked up the award for Top Streaming Songs Artist, dedicated his win for Artist of the Decade to his loved ones.

He said: “I wanna dedicate this award to my friends, to my longtime collaborators... to my beautiful family, and to you.”

Other big winners on the night included BTS and Bad Bunny, who scooped four awards apiece, Pop Smoke was posthumously honored with five awards and country star Gabby Barrett took three.

Taylor Swift was named Top Female Artist and Top Billboard 200 Artist, Lady Gaga won Top Dance/Electronic Album for Chromatica and Top Dance/Electronic Artist, and Machine Gun Kelly won both Top Rock Artist and Top Rock Album for Tickets To My Downfall.

Performers included The Weeknd, BTS, Alicia Keys, H.E.R. and Duran Duran.
