Philadelphia’s premier Southern Gothic outfit, 49 Burning Condors, ceremoniously unveiled their latest Witch Rock album, Seventh Hymnal, on September 9th, 2022.

Starting with the swampy twang in track 1, Bayou, the album Engineered and Produced by Matt Poirier at Miner Street Recordings, Philadelphia, PA and Mastered by Joe Lambert, NY, unravels with instant bewitching beguile.

The sermonic folk textures mixed with muddied gothic rock, complete with ominously quivering strings, is the ultimate siren call to the blackened times we have endured. Track 2, Little Death, a grief-strewn baroquely haunted ode to our frailty, opens up to track 3, Willow Tree, a gentler embodiment of 49 Burning Condors’ tensile compassion.

Track 4, Red Drum Skin, is the percussive masterpiece of the album. It is primed to tribally awaken any witness to the devilish bluesy gravitas before track 5, Noonday, moves into a more desert rock narratively led arena, and track 6, Chapel Hill, is a murder folk gem. The concluding title single is a gently sombre parting gift, which ethereally resounds through its artful chamber orchestral grace.

49 Burning Condors said:

“Seventh Hymnal was written during the pandemic; a time of abounding uncertainty, where death loomed around every corner, and chaos lingered in our world, homes, and veins. Our songs are dripping with stories of grief, bodies floating down the river, men drowning to a siren's song, and of the gods worshipped, who turned calamitous.

Seventh Hymnal is not only an outpouring of all the things we wanted to say but couldn't express in regular words to those we loved and even to ourselves, but a benediction and examination of a woman's role of power in the world of men.”

Amelia Vandergast, the Executive Editor at A&R Factory said:

“It isn’t often I’m left speechless; considering the very nature of Seventh Hymnal is to express what can never be accurately portrayed through words alone, the arrested daze that 49 Burning Condors left me in speaks volumes of their ability to run with an immensely powerful concept and take you along for the visceral ride until you’re subsequently soothed by the sonorous sonic vernacular.”

About

49 Burning Condors started with our lead guitarist (Chris), who was endeavouring with his solo career; his writing became the basis of so many 49BC ballads. We didn't truly start until lead singer Kimber put lyrics and melodies to these dark twangy acoustic tunes. Luck, happenstance, and probably the Fates landed us in New Orleans, where we wrote our first track, Rosaleen, about a woman who has her heart stolen by a witch on the Mississippi.

We quickly adopted all the right parts to form a rock band - drums (Kat Wilson) and bass (Zach Rinck). We were well on our way, but we had our heart set on a strings player as a full-time member; and soon found our trinity of women with our violinist, Andriana.

We started in dive bars but were surprised at how quickly the music spread throughout Philly. Within a few years, we were headlining stages like People's Light on the Main Line, performing for Alt 104.5's live show, and starting to branch out of Philly at Rockwood Music Hall in New York and the famous Lady Bug Fest in Delaware.

Our inspirations are endless -- the twangy blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell, the sudsy and sultry rock of Queens of the Stone Age, the haunting and fuzzy feel of Chelsea Wolfe and All Them Witches, and the heart-in-guts lyrics of Amy Winehouse. We love mythology. We sink our teeth into stories of women defeating men, tricking those around them, and seeking revenge. We want to haunt our audiences and stir in them a desire to shake their fists and baptize themselves under a full moon with the devil watching.
