Accidental Records is set to return to its roots in dance music with a debut album from little-known techno producer DJ Empty. ‘Meaningless’ is due to be released on 6th August and will be preceded by a limited 12” release of tracks off the album. 

Hard, dark and very funky, ‘Meaningless’ ranges from bubbling, mechanical, industrial beats to DJ Oizo-inflected swung synth riffs. The overall effect is like a bunch of industrial machines, some of whom have melodic and melancholic tendencies, coming to life and organising a rave.  Indeed, while there is much soul to be found in the record, the mechanical sound palette and impersonal track titles make this music unmistakably reminiscent of industrial processes.

DJ Empty is Hiroki Mamoru from Nagasaki, Japan, a 27 year old architecture student who managed to get his mixtape into the hands of Accidental label boss Matthew Herbert in 2008. Herbert was so impressed that a DJ Empty 12" swiftly followed, with minimal techno enthusiasts noting Herbert's endorsement and keen to see a full release from the little-known and then part-time producer.

That day has been longer coming than we might have expected back in 2008. Busy with his studies during the intervening period and with a change in personnel at the label also slowing things down, several years have passed before Empty's album debut, ‘Meaningless’, has made it to the shops.

As Mamoru says: "I'm delighted to have my debut out on Accidental. It means a lot to me to have the backing of Matthew Herbert, who has been a big influence on my own music. I hope this is the first of many records I get to release in the future".
