Chicago lyricist Defcee and producer Messiah Musik have announced a new album, The Golem of Brooklyn Original Soundtrack, for September 29th via Closed Sessions. Fully produced by Messiah Musik, The Golem of Brooklyn Original Soundtrack is a companion piece to Adam Mansbach's (Go The Fuck To Sleep) new novel of the same name. Defcee uses the book and its characters to examine Jewish-American culture in all its beauty, ugliness, and the spaces in between.

"When I first read The Golem of Brooklyn, it was instantly relatable to my experience as a Jewish millennial. I saw too much of myself in Len's shlubby anxiety; in Miri's existential struggle between unconditional faith and the desire to find herself outside of that context, and in The Golem's general frustration and annoyance with any and everything that makes him want to hurtle concrete hulks across open spaces. It inspired me to write an album about being white and Jewish, which I've always thought about writing. I'm grateful it's in the framework of a brilliant work of literature--hilarious, thoughtful, vivid, and educational, the hallmarks of my favorite novels. The soundtrack is, hopefully, reflective of those qualities."

Defcee (Adam Levin), a fixture in Chicago's hip-hop and poetry scene, came up through Young Chicago Authors, where he eventually ran rap and poetry workshops. He's since become a teacher in the Chicagoland area. He's put out a steady flow of music over the past ten years, breaking further into the underground rap scene with his previous release, Trapdoor, released in 2021 via billy woods Backwoodz Studioz, his breakout solo All Debts Public and Private in 2022, and most recently It’s Always A Time Like This an album he put out via defrprez, the group project he shares with fellow Chicago artist CRASHprez and knowsthetime. In the past year, he’s received recognition from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, FADER, Stereogum, Bandcamp Daily, Spin, Complex and much more.
