Formed in January 2023, Mellow Mayhems comprises Sam Macdonald (guitar, vocals), Peter Korotki (bass, backing vocals), and Stephen Brown (drums, backing vocals). "Tricks", the band's first single, draws inspiration from the timeless Motown sound, blending Sam Macdonald’s wide-ranging and soulful vocals and Peter Korotki’s powerful and bouncy bass hook and the complementary horns.

Clocking in at three-and-a-half minutes, the song is a delightful fusion of blues and Motown, with lyrics that echo the raw emotion of Nina Simone - “I’ve no caring for your glaring / I’m no playmate for your hate.”

Reflecting on the creation of "Tricks", Sam Macdonald shares, "The song was written with Motown in mind, and chords and rhythm kind of came from The Band’s classic cover of Marvin Gaye’s Don’t Do It. As the song developed through us playing gigs, the vocals took on a kind of bluesy, soulful feel."

Adding to the track's charm are the individual personalities of each band member.
