Katy Perry has revealed the meaning behind her new single.

The US songstress released the track 'Roar' today (August 12) as she looks ahead to the unveiling of her new album 'Prism' in October.

Its promotional material pre-release saw Perry 'kill off' her 'Teenage Dream' era and it seems the singer is going for a more strong-willed ethos.

Speaking to Ryan Seacrest, the singer revealed that 'Roar' is about the virtues of standing up for yourself and what you believe in. Perry said:

"This song is about speaking up for yourself. There was a time in my life where I didn’t stand for anything so I fell for everything so finally I have the strength to rise above and roar."
