Katy Perry has poured cold water over rumours that she went out on a date with One Direction's Niall Horan.

The two singers were spotted leaving the same restaurant separately last week in New York and some sections of the media reported that they were on a date.

However, Horan quickly dismissed the rumour in an interview and said that they were in the same place by coincidence.

Perry has now backed the One Direction man's words, telling Capital FM that the gossip is all nonsense. She said:

"It's all made up. I was doing an interview there and he happened to be there with someone else and I just said 'hello' – and that's how the Internet goes."

The 'Roar' star was the subject of a joke proposal earlier this year from Horan after she praised the singer on the X Factor.
