Julia Biel

Live show on 17th September at Archspace, London

“The best British vocalist to emerge in an age” THE INDEPENDENT

Frequently compared with the great heavyweights of jazz Nina Simone and Billie Holiday for the individuality and emotional impact of her vocal, JULIA BIEL is back with a brand new soul/jazz/pop crossover single ‘Wasting Breath’.

The brooding, laid-back groove with its catchy string arrangement provides a colourful backdrop to Julia’s nuanced voice that soothes and stirs in equal measure, as she takes us through her injured narrative wending her way fluidly through the notes, her soulful jazz roots coming to the fore over the deceptively simple but layered production. The story of a lover who gambled on her love and destroyed her trust as he returns to plead for her forgiveness, he finds she has moved on and the music strikes a triumphant note at the story’s end.

Known for her incredible live performances, you won't want to miss her show at Archspace in London on 17th September. Tickets available HERE

Produced by Idris Rahman, whose deft touch has worked its magic on previous Mercury Prize nominees Zoe Rahman and Basquiat Strings, alongside Julia herself, ‘Wasting Breath’ sees them continue a production collaboration that began with Julia’s previous critically acclaimed, MOBO and Urban Music Award nominated second album, ‘Love Letters and Other Missiles’. Subtly intertwining the classic with the contemporary, they create an immersive, timeless sound that sounds as familiar as it does difficult to pin down.

“She’s very uncategorisable - somewhere between a jazz singer and the music of Radiohead, Bjork or Amy Winehouse, or something like that - very much a mixture of a lot of great things and very musically adventurous at the same time and very listenable.”

JAMIE CULLUM, a long-time champion of Julia’s work summarised on his Radio 2 show.

And it was the success of that previous album in 2015 that has resulted in a whirlwind of an international career for Julia, seeing the singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist performing countless headline shows with her compact 3-piece line-up alongside household names at major festivals right across Europe and beyond, taking in her first shows in U.S. and even headlining a festival in Penang Island.  That this is still an artist ‘at the beginning of an extraordinary career’ (Stereoplay, Germany) only confirms the buzz around JULIA BIEL and how much further this artist can fly, London’s Evening Standard chiming in agreement she ‘should really be a household name’.  A word-of-mouth fan base is growing at home and abroad and a stunning new album is on the horizon - it may yet happen.
