19TH AUGUST 2021 (VANCOUVER, CANADA) – the unapologetically provocative singer/songwriter and dance artist LEANDRO has today unveiled “GODDAM IDIOT”.

The release of “GODDAM IDIOT” comes as LEANDRO’s global launch of a brand new genre - PROTEST POP. In the coming months, you can expect a new collection of EDM tracks from LEANDRO with complex, delicious-sounding melodies and hard-driven dance beats. The tracks come bearing purposeful messages about the world we live in. And with it, LEANDRO is leading a revolution. LEANDRO coined the term ‘PROTEST POP’ when developing tracks within the Pop genre that had powerful lyrics inspired by life’s pain, anger, resentment and brutal honesty. LEANDRO also uses his medium of music to inspire and empower those from marginalised groups, most notably, those in the LGBTQ+ community. LEANDRO has always been motivated by revolutionary songwriters when creating music - drawing inspiration from John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and the ‘Queen of the Protest Song’ Nina Simone.

“I want to be the “NINA SIMONE” of EDM. To quote her - "It's an artist's duty to reflect the times in which we live." As an artist, that is my personal mantra.”

Thrilling, unfiltered and liberated, “GODDAM IDIOT” is an anthem inspired by the toxicity in the influencer industry. Although most influencers online are positive, LEANDRO saw the rise of wealthy and famous social media stars, and artists, promoting destructive behaviour and not taking responsibility for their audience. The most recent example being the recent homophobic comments about the LGBTQ+ community from shamed rapper DaBaby. LEANDRO explains: “They all have a huge following of mostly kids who see nothing wrong with what they are doing. These internet celebrities get away with actual crimes committed to their own fans. "Stans" are a huge part of this problem.”

The lyrics were also inspired by the intense, fiery, yet candid writings of Nina Simone. LEANDRO purposely spelt "goddamn" as "GODDAM" without the "N" as a homage to her own 60s protest song "Mississippi Goddam", which was banned from US radio. LEANDRO brought the piece together by channelling Nina Simone's vocal stylings of gritty, harsh-sounding "gravel" and smooth sounding "coffee & cream" when recording the song’s vocals.

In the coming months, LEANDRO is planning to release two more tracks from his original roster, with “MR BILLIONAIRE” and “SHUT UP!”. Creating a Disco-Country-Hoedown sound, LEANDRO wrote the anthem "SHUT UP!" as a direct, "not-so-love song" to extreme Evangelical street preachers who attack the LGBTQIA2S+ Community. Speaking about the origins of the track, LEANDRO explained: “There are sometimes subjects that need to be expressed without any doubt, fear or barriers - this is one of those subjects".

About

When you meet LEANDRO, you can’t help but pick up on his rebellious yet spiritful energy. His passion for using his platform to encourage social change and the fight for equality is fiercely represented in his music, albeit in a mainstream-sounding pop form. PROTEST POP as a new genre represents his personal truth and authenticity, which can be a rare find in today’s Pop world.

Although new to the original music scene, LEANDRO has been involved in the performance industry for some time. Including his highly acclaimed self-produced stage show "REINVENTION OF DISCO". The stage show was a theatre musical cabaret featuring the reinvented and remixed hits of Queen of Disco - Donna Summer. LEANDRO conceptualized, produced, directed, choreographed, and performed as "The Reinventor" who serves as The Host (reminiscent of the host in the Broadway Musical "Cabaret") and a main, featured dancer in the show. It ran from 2014 - 2016 in Vancouver. During this time, LEANDRO was interviewed on national TV by journalist & host Gloria Macarenko for CBC TV. LEANDRO recalls “Teaching Ms Macarenko how to burn up a disco dance floor was a beautiful moment for me & one that I will truly never forget!”

This flamboyant performance style is a cornerstone of LEANDRO’s image, with audiences expecting an intense and dramatic experience when watching him live. As per LEANDRO’s personality - it’s set to be cheeky, humorous and interactive. Taking several pages off Madonna and Lady Gaga’s live stage performances, LEANDRO is also inspired by the visual performances of David Bowie, Annie Lennox and Pink.

But when the glitter has settled, and the stage lights are off, LEANDRO’s true purpose as an artist is to become a force and voice of social change for the marginalized. Through his music, he wants to pave the way for more unseen and unheard artists such as himself and make a positive impact on the world. This ideology stems from him giving up his dreams of succeeding in the music industry for several years, and falling into a dark place. However, one morning in 2018, LEANDRO woke up from a dream and heard a series of melodies ringing in his ears. Instinctively, he grabbed his phone and recorded himself humming that tune, but completely forgot about that recording until January of 2020 when he rediscovered that recording.

Around that time, he had already decided that he wanted to re-enter the entertainment industry. But this time, he was determined to do something different. Listening to that recorded melody from his dream stirred something inside of him and eventually, this became the not yet released track - “Alexander McQueen”. This, paired with many more releases on the horizon, we know that this is only the beginning of LEANDRO’s PROTEST POP revolution.
