Latest review...
What an oddity Supercharge is: a man? a collaboration? a project? It's unclear at this stage and their music is entirely different from track to track. The forthcoming Supercharge single 'Crash & Burn' draws influence from Public Service Broadcasting, only darker and fuller, the vocals coming from samples of propaganda films coupled with sweeping filmic backing; The album 'DUBFUNKBREAKSNBEATZ' harks back to a time when 90s Indie/Dance was in its infancy yet feels nostalgic at the same time. UNKLE, DJ Shadow, De La Soul, Fatboy Sim, General Levy and even Moroder have been listed as influences from the forum fans. Comments and reviews have filled the forum and Supercharge have already gained a ripe review in NME on the back of a debut album. The last single 'Go On, Build Up!' also reached a respectable No. 9 in the EDM charts with a maximum possible popularity bar gained in iTunes!

That oddness of the music is also rather safe. There is nothing unnerving about it. In fact, this is a vision of 'retro-futurism' in which producer Mik Newton feels at home. While he claims they are trying to "teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future", it's hard to see these songs as anything other than nostalgia. There always a bit of tongue-in cheek in Mik's voice, citing the album as a new form of music known as 'Meta-Genre-Fusion'. There's little to challenge here from the wackiness however. While you can hear parts taken from the pioneers of cut-up music, as well as the motorik of krautrock, the overwhelming impression is of an indie group discovering or rediscovering sampling, and going slightly over the top.

Still, there are moments when Supercharge's filmic music works perfectly. 50,000W is fast and thrilling, with its Stevie Wonder style clavi parts, even if the emotions it stirs are more comedic than draw dropping. Darkside's melancholy is also grand, cold and beautiful at the same time.

But where does Supercharge go from here? Their niche is so loosely defined they seem to get away with trying on any genre for size. Gaining new fans from a new market. Hmmm.
