Gerard Piqué has confirmed that news of his girlfriend Shakira giving birth was just a joke.

The Barcelona footballer posted on Twitter that the singer, who is expecting a child, had a baby boy and that the couple were "very happy" at the news.

However, doubts emerged after it was revealed that he posted the update on Spain's Day of the Holy Innocents, which is similar to April Fools' Day.

He originally said: "Our son has been born! We are very happy! Thanks to all for your messages."

Piqué, however, has now confirmed that it was all a hoax, adding: "It already has a name! Called innocent! Happy day of the innocents to all!"

Shakira is expected to give birth to a boy - which will be the couple's first child together - in early 2013.
