Taylor Swift: 'People need music when they're either falling in love or out of love the most'

Superstar Taylor Swift has spoken about how music has the ability to inspire emotions and also to help people deal with things they're going through on the day of her new album's release.

'Red' was officially unveiled today (October 22) and during a new interview with MTV News, Swift explained that she feels music can be incredibly cathartic and there are two times in particular when people need it the most:

"I think that when people need music the most is when they are falling in love intensely or they're falling out of love or losing love or being let down or frustrated or hurt. And you don't know how to say exactly how you feel and if there's a song that can hit on it and touch that exact nerve that you're feeling. It's why people are so obsessed with music."

She also said that the songs on her new album reflect her own experiences as she likes to write about what she knows and the things she has been through or seen other people around her cope with: "I really tend to draw inspiration from my life and from the characters in my life. And it's just kind of for me something I've always loved doing, watching life play out and kind of making a song out of that."

Going back to the theme of love, which Swift recently revealed her new record is mostly about, she added that relationships and matters of the heart are the things that 'confuse us most' so she wanted to explore that concept with 'Red':

"It's why I write most of my songs about emotions and feelings and relationship issues because that's what confuses us most in life. So it's nice to feel that there's more than just you feeling that way." Listen to 'Begin Again', which is from her new album, below:
