Russell Kane takes to the streets to find out what makes the Great British Public smile

Barclaycard challenged Russell Kane to help celebrate its enhanced entertainment programme available through Barclaycard Unwind

Performing the feathered peacock in a yoga class, studying philosophy or waiting for your laundry are not places you’d expect to find funny! However, these were some of the unusual locations comedian, Russell Kane ventured to as part of the Barclaycard Unwind Smile Experiment, to find out what makes the Great British Public smile.

Barclaycard Unwind brought its Smile Experiment to the streets to celebrate its even wider range of exclusive perks, access and special offers on entertainment, including stand-up comedy.

Unwind makes it easier to access and enjoy entertainment and what better way than taking one of the UK’s premier stand up comedians, Russell Kane to the people.

Over the course of a day Russell set out to make people laugh in a variety of different locations. The Smile Experiment showed that despite the situation, whether it be: on a bus, sat on a park bench or in a yoga class, the great British public is always up for a laugh.

However, it was an experiment so it wasn’t all plain sailing but despite what Russell described as “the smallest, and most awkward gig” in a launderette in East London people couldn’t resist his comedic charms, whatever the situation.

Russell said: “The British public is well known for its sense of humour and the Smile Experiment certainly put it to the test. It seems that no matter how strange or mundane the situation, comedy has the infectious power to transform our mood and the way we look at the world. The video is incredibly awkward but also strangely compelling.

“Barclaycard Unwind set me the challenge of going into environments where people would not be expected to laugh and make them smile.  It was totally random, one minute I was in a tiny launderette and the next in the middle of a lecture theatre. I think the launderette was the smallest gig I have done. The best bit was the Brazilian cleaner, and she had no idea what I was saying! That is well worth watching.”

Katherine Whitton, Barclaycard’s European Marketing Director said: “We wanted to give people a big reason to smile with Barclaycard Unwind, so what better way to do this than setting Russell the challenge of putting the public’s sense of humour to the test. Barclaycard Unwind brings live acts to people, making it easier to see shows, including comedy stand up. Working with a comedian like Russell was the perfect fit.”

Barclaycard Unwind is an entertainment platform that makes enjoying entertainment easier as it provides Barclaycard customers with exclusive access and great value ticketing to an even broader range of entertainment events including comedy. Barclaycard customers have the exclusive opportunity to a variety of benefits including purchasing tickets without fees on Fee Free Friday, access to pre-sale tickets and the latest news and gossip from the entertainment world.
