'When A Man Loves A Woman' singer Percy Sledge dies at 74

Singer Percy Sledge, who recorded the classic 1966 soul ballad 'When a Man Loves a Woman', has died at 74-years-old.

Louisiana Coroner Dr. William "Beau" Clark confirmed the sad news today and explained that the star passed away early this morning (April 14). The cause of death was liver cancer, Sledge's manager Steve Green tells Rolling Stone.

Sledge started out his career as a hospital orderly, but his vocal talent saw him go on to enjoy a successful life as a performing and recording artist who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2005. Sledge's rendition of 'When A Man Loves A Woman' placed 53rd in the list of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest songs of all time.

'When A Man Loves A Woman' peaked at No.2 on the British charts in 1987 after it was featured in a Levis commercial and Sledge recorded several albums later on in his career, the last a gospel album released in 2013.
