5SOS: 'We get portrayed as a boyband, but it's important to be able to sing and harmonise well'

Australian pop-punk heartthrobs 5 Seconds Of Summer recently sat down for an interview with Spin magazine and opened up about the 'boyband' tag they're often labelled with.

The band's drummer, Ashton Irwin, admitted that harmonies and melody are what seem to be the things that encourage people to categorise them in that way:

"That's one of the crucial things that made people go, "Oh, that's a boy band." Mariana's Trench and stuff, the way they harmonise was so fascinating to us. It was like, "Whoa, you guys can sing and sing so f**king well." That was super impressive. We really aimed to sound like that."

Referring to people who consider themselves to be music connoisseurs, Irwin added that they probably won't be taken seriously as a group until they've had a 20-year career: "They'll never like anyone until they've been around for 20 years and have epic beards and shit. It's also the media. We get portrayed as a boyband. I think it's a good thing that we confuse people. Get people talking about us."
