What was your ambition for Les Misérables?
My ambition was to make sure that this felt like a big canvas, on which we were telling intimate and small stories of individuals from a turbulent period of French history from 1815 to 1832, and the failure of this uprising. We’re always keeping an eye on the heroes and their challenges in life, but it was important to me that we’re setting it on as big of a canvas as possible.

What was your visual direction for the series?
Victor Hugo’s novel is fascinated by the highest and lowest of humanity, and that carries over into his settings. The lowest settings are the sewers or the aftermath of the battle of Waterloo... no matter how low you go, you always find a sense of beauty.
