Cher receives the Billboard Icon Award

Cher was honoured with the Billboard Icon Award last night (May 21) at the Billboard Music Awards.

The legendary singer who has been in the business for over half a century on accepting the gong from Gwen Stefani, said:

"So, I've wanted to do what I do since I was four years-old, and I've been doing it for 53 years. That is not an applause thing, I'm 71 yesterday. And I can do a five-minute plank, okay? Just saying."

The singer (born Cherilyn Sarkisian), thanked her mother, for the words of wisdom she gave her when she was a child. Cher said her mother told her:"you're not going to be the smartest, you're not going to be the prettiest, you're not going to be the most talented, but you're going to be special."

She continued: "I think luck has so much to do with with my success. I think it was mostly luck and a little bit of something thrown in."

She also thanked legendary songwriter Diane Warren, as well as Warner Bros.' Rob Dickins and longtime friend and label boss David Geffen.

Before receiving the award, the icon performed a medley of her biggest hits.

It was quite a week for Cher as she celebrated her 71st birthday the day before on Saturday (May 21). Kim Kardashian led the social media good wishes with over 20 tributes uploaded onto her Instagram.
