Kansas City filmmaker Patrick Rea directed the drama short film The Last Butterflies, which was shot in Oceanside, California, Kansas City, Missouri, and several locations throughout Kansas state. It’s scheduled for its world premiere at Arizona Underground Film Festival on September 16, 2023.

The story follows a mother and daughter during their quest for survival as a near-future dystopia foresees the impending apocalypse. The Last Butterflies is a tale of love, resilience, and the human spirit in the face of adversity, exploring the lengths a family will go to protect one another.

The Last Butterflies stars Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead, Shazam!), Whitney Wegman-Wood (Valhalla, Carbon), Merrick McCartha (Failure!, Senior Year), Adam Boyer (Ozark, Looper) and Amber Grayson (Everybody Dies by the End, Kung Fu Ghost). The production team consists of director and editor Patrick Rea (They Wait in the Dark, I am Lisa), writer and producer Whitney Wegman-Wood, producers Cooper Andrews, Jake Jackson, Sue Vicory and John Wood, cinematographer Taylor Snyder, and music by Ben Adams and Bobby Brader.
