Dua Lipa Reflects on Building Her Singing Confidence

Songstress Dua Lipa has revealed that she was turned away from joining her school choir during an impromptu audition that left her classmates laughing.

Speaking to Trixie Mattel, the 'Houdini' hitmaker revealed that it happened at primary school and was rather embarrassing:

"It was primary school and the music teacher was like, "Right" - this was like assembly - "Who wants to sing and try for the choir?" and “I went, ‘Y’know what? I’d like to actually do that.’ So, I decided to stand up for the whole school, and he started playing on the piano. It was in this crazy high note, and nothing came out—just air in that moment. And the whole school started laughing. He was like, "You know what? Better next time."

She went onto add that going forward, having one person celebrate her unique voice helped her to build confidence and believe in herself after that initial setback:

"But then I went to singing lessons in a theatre school every Saturday in London and it was the teacher there that helped me build up my confidence. He was the scariest teacher - his name was Ray - he was the one when I was nine years old. He was like, "OK, I want you to get up and sing in front of the whole class." I sang and he was like, "Alright, I'm moving you up to the class with 14 and 15-year-olds". I was so nervous, but I went to that class and he helped me build up my confidence that I had something - and he celebrated me for my deeper, lower voice."
